Quick answer: Provably fair is a system that lets you check that a crypto casino did not change the result of your bet. Before you play, the casino commits to a hidden server seed by showing you its hash. Your result is generated from that server seed, your own client seed and a nonce (bet number). After you rotate seeds, the casino reveals the server seed so you can recalculate every result and confirm it matches.
In this guide:
At a traditional online casino you trust that the random number generator (RNG) is fair because an auditor says so. Provably fair games let you check fairness yourself using cryptography. Each result can be recalculated from public inputs after the fact, so the casino cannot secretly change an outcome once you have placed your bet.
Provably fair is used mainly in crypto casino “originals” such as crash, dice, limbo, Plinko and Mines. Third-party slots and live dealer games usually use certified RNGs instead.
| Input | Who controls it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Server seed | Casino | A secret random string. You see only its hash (a fingerprint) until you rotate seeds. |
| Client seed | You | A string you can set or change at any time, so the casino cannot pick a seed that works against you. |
| Nonce | Automatic | A counter that goes up by one with every bet, so each bet with the same seed pair gets a new result. |
The casino combines these inputs with a cryptographic function, most commonly HMAC-SHA256, and converts the output into a game result, such as a dice roll, a crash multiplier or a Plinko path.
A hash is a one-way fingerprint. If the casino shows you the SHA-256 hash of its server seed before you bet, it is locked in: changing even one character of the seed would produce a completely different hash. When the seed is later revealed, you hash it yourself and check it matches the fingerprint you were shown. If it matches, the casino could not have swapped the seed mid-session.
Most crypto-native casinos offer provably fair originals, including Stake, BC.Game, Duelbits, Shuffle, Rollbit and BetFury. Look for a “Fairness” or “Provably Fair” link in the game settings.
It proves the casino did not change your result after you bet, assuming you verify the seeds. It does not remove the house edge built into the game.
A secret random value generated by the casino. You see its hash before betting and the real seed after you rotate seeds.
Setting your own client seed means the casino cannot choose a seed combination in advance that works against you.
A counter that increases by one with each bet, so every bet produces a different result from the same seed pair.
Usually not. Third-party slots use certified RNGs. Provably fair is mostly used in crypto originals like dice, crash, Plinko and Mines.
