Provably Fair Explained: How to Verify a Crypto Casino Bet

What provably fair means, how server seeds, client seeds and nonces work, and how to verify a crypto casino bet yourself step by step.

By Chris Wyatt · Updated October 2026

Quick answer: Provably fair is a system that lets you check that a crypto casino did not change the result of your bet. Before you play, the casino commits to a hidden server seed by showing you its hash. Your result is generated from that server seed, your own client seed and a nonce (bet number). After you rotate seeds, the casino reveals the server seed so you can recalculate every result and confirm it matches.

In this guide:

What Does Provably Fair Mean?

At a traditional online casino you trust that the random number generator (RNG) is fair because an auditor says so. Provably fair games let you check fairness yourself using cryptography. Each result can be recalculated from public inputs after the fact, so the casino cannot secretly change an outcome once you have placed your bet.

Provably fair is used mainly in crypto casino “originals” such as crash, dice, limbo, Plinko and Mines. Third-party slots and live dealer games usually use certified RNGs instead.

The Three Ingredients: Server Seed, Client Seed and Nonce

InputWho controls itWhat it does
Server seedCasinoA secret random string. You see only its hash (a fingerprint) until you rotate seeds.
Client seedYouA string you can set or change at any time, so the casino cannot pick a seed that works against you.
NonceAutomaticA counter that goes up by one with every bet, so each bet with the same seed pair gets a new result.

The casino combines these inputs with a cryptographic function, most commonly HMAC-SHA256, and converts the output into a game result, such as a dice roll, a crash multiplier or a Plinko path.

Why the Hash Matters

A hash is a one-way fingerprint. If the casino shows you the SHA-256 hash of its server seed before you bet, it is locked in: changing even one character of the seed would produce a completely different hash. When the seed is later revealed, you hash it yourself and check it matches the fingerprint you were shown. If it matches, the casino could not have swapped the seed mid-session.

How to Verify a Bet Step by Step

  1. Set your own client seed in the casino’s fairness settings before playing. Any random text works.
  2. Note the hashed server seed shown in the same menu.
  3. Play your bets. Each one records the client seed, nonce and hashed server seed.
  4. Rotate your seed pair. The casino now reveals the old (unhashed) server seed and creates a new one.
  5. Check the hash: run the revealed server seed through any SHA-256 tool and confirm it matches the hash you saw earlier.
  6. Recalculate results: use the casino’s built-in verifier or an independent open-source verifier, enter server seed, client seed and nonce, and confirm each result matches your bet history.

What Provably Fair Does Not Guarantee

  • It does not remove the house edge. A provably fair dice game with a 1% edge still returns 99% over time. See our RTP and house edge guide.
  • It does not cover every game. Slots from providers and live dealer games use different fairness systems.
  • It does not make an unsafe casino safe. Licensing, withdrawal reliability and fair bonus terms still matter. Check our crypto casino reviews.

Which Crypto Casinos Offer Provably Fair Games?

Most crypto-native casinos offer provably fair originals, including Stake, BC.Game, Duelbits, Shuffle, Rollbit and BetFury. Look for a “Fairness” or “Provably Fair” link in the game settings.

Provably Fair FAQs

Is provably fair really fair?

It proves the casino did not change your result after you bet, assuming you verify the seeds. It does not remove the house edge built into the game.

What is a server seed?

A secret random value generated by the casino. You see its hash before betting and the real seed after you rotate seeds.

Why should I change my client seed?

Setting your own client seed means the casino cannot choose a seed combination in advance that works against you.

What is a nonce in provably fair?

A counter that increases by one with each bet, so every bet produces a different result from the same seed pair.

Are slots provably fair?

Usually not. Third-party slots use certified RNGs. Provably fair is mostly used in crypto originals like dice, crash, Plinko and Mines.
