Plinko Guide: Rules, Risk Levels, Odds and RTP

How crypto Plinko works, what rows and risk levels change, the real odds of hitting the edge multipliers, RTP and tips for playing Plinko.

By Chris Wyatt · Updated October 2026

Quick answer: In Plinko you drop a ball down a pyramid of pegs. At each peg it bounces left or right with equal chance, and it lands in a slot with a multiplier. You choose the number of rows (usually 8 to 16) and a risk level (low, medium or high). More rows and higher risk mean bigger edge multipliers that are much harder to hit. Crypto originals Plinko typically has around 99% RTP.

In this guide:

How Plinko Works

  1. Choose your bet size.
  2. Pick the number of rows, typically from 8 to 16.
  3. Select a risk level: low, medium or high.
  4. Drop the ball. It bounces through the pegs and lands in a multiplier slot at the bottom.
  5. Your payout is your bet times that multiplier.

Slots in the middle pay low multipliers (often below 1x, meaning a partial loss), while the slots on the edges pay the biggest multipliers.

Why the Middle Is Most Likely

At every peg the ball has a 50/50 chance of going left or right. To reach an outer slot, it must go the same direction at every single peg, which is rare. With 16 rows there are 65,536 equally likely paths, and only one leads to each outermost slot.

RowsNumber of possible pathsChance of hitting one specific edge slot
82561 in 256 (0.39%)
124,0961 in 4,096 (0.024%)
1665,5361 in 65,536 (0.0015%)

Rows and Risk Levels Explained

  • Low risk: multipliers are close together, so results stay near your stake. Lower variance, smaller top prizes.
  • Medium risk: a balance of frequent small returns and occasional bigger hits.
  • High risk: middle slots pay very little (often 0.2x or less) while edge slots pay huge multipliers, up to around 1,000x on 16 rows at some casinos.
  • More rows: spread outcomes wider and raise the top multiplier, but make the edges far rarer.

Changing rows and risk changes variance, not the house edge. The RTP is usually the same across settings.

Plinko RTP and House Edge

Crypto casino originals versions of Plinko typically return about 99% (a 1% house edge), which is much better than most slots. Branded Plinko games from game studios can have lower RTPs, so check the game info panel. Learn more in our RTP and house edge guide.
