Quick answer: In baccarat you bet on whether the Player hand, the Banker hand or a Tie will finish closest to 9. You do not make any decisions after betting; the cards are dealt by fixed rules. The Banker bet has the lowest house edge (1.06%, after a 5% commission), Player is 1.24%, and the Tie bet is a poor 14.36% at 8:1.

You never need to memorise this: the dealer or software applies it automatically.
| Bet | Payout | House edge (8 decks) |
|---|---|---|
| Banker | 1:1 minus 5% commission | 1.06% |
| Player | 1:1 | 1.24% |
| Tie | 8:1 | 14.36% |
Some tables offer “no commission” baccarat, where a Banker win on 6 pays only half. This raises the Banker edge slightly, so compare the rules. Side bets such as Player Pair or Banker Pair usually carry much higher edges.
